Our History

Speedy Submarine Sandwich open its doors in Fairbanks, Alaska, on June 18, 1988. Bob Lynch, who was soon known only as “Speedy”, had been a house painter for 30 years. Recently divorced and looking for something new, he took a nugget of an idea, and opened the first store on Third Avenue.

His idea was simple: provide a good quality sub for a decent price, and do so expediently. He knew people had limited time for lunch and he wanted to make sure that the time spent actually getting lunch was as swift as possible to ensure people had more time to enjoy it.

Speedy didn’t suffer fools gladly and he could appear gruff, or even rude. He deliberately designed his first store with minimal seating, so as not to encourage laggers. Through the years, as he developed relationships and friendships with his customers, he recognized that giving them a place to sit and chat about everything from the weather to politics, was probably in his best interest.
